Highlands mountainous region, N Scotland. Famous for its rugged beauty,
it consists roughly of that part of Scotland north of the imaginary
line from Dumbarton to Stonehaven, excluding the Orkneys, the Shetlands,
and lower coastal areas.
Farming, fishing, and distilling are the main occupations; tourism is
also important. Early history is not well known, but by the 11th cent.
the Scottish monarchy was centered in the Lowlands, and the Highland
lairds were left to run their own affairs. In the early 18th cent. Highlanders
strongly supported the JACOBITE uprisings.
Until the 19th cent. the Scottish Gaelic language was the core of a
Highland culture marked by the clan system and distinctive dress (kilt,
tartan, etc.). From this rugged beauty we bring you 100% cotton sweaters
made by Harley and Co., of Scotland.
