Farming, fishing, and distilling are the main occupations; tourism is also important. Early history is not well known, but by the 11th cent. the Scottish monarchy was centered in the Lowlands, and the Highland lairds were left to run their own affairs. In the early 18th cent. Highlanders strongly supported the JACOBITE uprisings.
